Biographical history
Dr Patricia McMagh was a direct descendant of Dr Friedrich Ludwig Liesching. She was born in Mooi River, Natal, and educated in Johannesburg as a school teacher. After the Second World War she studied for an M Ed degree and was awarded the Grey Memorial Scholarship and became the first woman in South Africa to obtain a D Ed degree. She was widely travelled, held lectureships at the Johannesburg College of Education and the University of Stellenbosch. She wrote three books on the teaching of English, and after retiring in 1966, she concentrated on historical research.

Dr Fay Liesching was a direct descendant of Dr Friedrich Ludwig Liesching. She was born in Cape Town and studied medicine, devoting her life to providing medical care in the townships.

Research material collected and compiled by Dr Patricia McMagh and her cousin Dr Fay Liesching on their mutual ancestor Dr Friedrich Ludwig Liesching and his extended family over generations in South Africa, as well as several related or other families, notably Howard, Leonard, Norval, Phipps, Ralph and Jeffreys, and Rubridge. Contains biographical and genealogical information, genealogical tables, archival source material, photographs and correspondence. A particular focus was the role of Dr Friedrich Ludwig Liesching, as well as two of his sons, in the history of medicine and pharmacology in South Africa.
