Dr Fay Liesching was a direct descendant of Dr Friedrich Ludwig Liesching. She was born in Cape Town and studied medicine, devoting her life to providing medical care in the townships.

Besides her working life as a medical doctor, together with her cousin, Dr Patricia McMagh, Dr Liesching researched the history of the extended Liesching family and the role of the progenitor in South Africa, Dr Friedrich Ludwig Liesching, as well as his sons, the history of medicine and pharmacology. She also undertook extensive historical and genealogical research into several related branches of her family. Much of the material in the collection is the product of her research.
