History
Dr Patricia McMagh was a direct descendant of Dr Friedrich Ludwig Liesching. She was born in Mooi River, Natal, and educated in Johannesburg as a school teacher. After the Second World War she studied for an M Ed degree and was awarded the Grey Memorial Scholarship and became the first woman in South Africa to obtain a D Ed degree. She was widely travelled, held lectureships at the Johannesburg College of Education and the University of Stellenbosch. She wrote three books on the teaching of English, and after retiring in 1966, she concentrated on historical research.

Together with her cousin, Dr Fay Liesching, Dr McMagh researched the history of the extended Liesching family and the role of the progenitor in South Africa, Dr Friedrich Ludwig Liesching, as well as his sons, the history of medicine and pharmacology.
Her work "The Three Lieschings: Their Time and Contribution to Cape Medicine 1800-1843" was published by the Society for the History of Pharmacy in South Africa, Cape Town, 1992.
