Transcript of interview with Izzy Rome of Johannesburg. Born in Lithuania in 1892. Father involved in a timber business and was mayor of the village for 25 years; mother ran a general store. Interviewee immigrated to South Africa in 1908. Worked in a bicycle shop for first few years, then in stores in various country places, before settling permanently in Johannesburg in 1929.
