The collection contains correspondence, documentation and ephemera related to the implications of Jewish immigration to South Africa in the 1930s. The collection chronicles the challenges encountered by Kurt Baldinger to gain permission for his parents and brother to immigrate to South Africa. Kurt wrote numerous letters to the Secretary of the Interior requesting that his family members be allowed into the country. His parents were finally allowed to enter South Africa in 1937. His brother Heinz’s application was denied twice. In 1942 Kurt made a third attempt citing the oppression of Jews in Nazi Germany as a reason for his brother’s application to be accepted. Less than a month after Heinz’s application was rejected again he was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau where he was murdered.
