The obverse image shows the position of Regiment 48 along the Western front after occupation and clearance of the ground after fighting during the Second Battle of the Marne, which lasted from 15 July - 6 August 1918, resulting in German defeat and enormous casualties. The reverse includes a note by Bernhard Schragenheim dated 25 July 1918
