The collection was donated to the Cape Town Holocaust and Genocide Centre by Michaux’s daughter, Liliane Germain, in 1997.

Scope and content

The collection contains the Dachau prison identity card, shoe receipt and original concentration camp jacket worn in the Dachau concentration camp. The blue and white striped jacket belonged to Alexander Michaux, a Belgian political dissident and saboteur working with the Belgian underground. The jacket itself contains his prison number and a red triangle, indicating his classification as a political prisoner. He was captured by the Gestapo trying to flee into Spain. After his capture he was kept in solitary confinement for three months in Dijon before being sent to Dachau. Shortly before the war ended he managed to escape a work party and was later found by Allied Forces and taken to the south of Belgium for rehabilitation. The jacket was first displayed at the ‘Anne Frank in the World’ international exhibition held at the South African National Gallery in 1994. It has been on permanent display in the exhibition of the Cape Town Holocaust Centre since 1999.
