Scope and content
List of 425 children arriving in France from Buchenwald and other German concentration camps on 8 June 1945 and hosted in the Ecouis Children's Home of the Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants (OSE). Known as the 'Buchenwald Orphans', approximately 1000 Jewish children, most of whom were originally from Poland, Hungary, Slovenia and Ruthenia, were liberated from Buchenwald by American soldiers on 11 April 1945. The group of survivors were sent to Switzerland, France and England. At Ecouis the children were given medical care, counseling and schooling until more permanent accommodation could be found. Most of the children remained only four to eight weeks at Ecouis before being moved elsewhere, and the home was closed in August 1945. List compiled by Geneva-based OSE representatives. The list includes name, date of birth and place of birth. The list was distributed and stamped by the Relatives Information Service on 7 January 1946.
