The collection is made up of a variety of separate donations to the Cape Town Holocaust Centre. It contains different examples of currency in Germany following the First World War. Some were created for use in ghettos during the Second World War, including bank notes designed for exclusive use by Jews. The Nazi created this ‘lagergeld’ (camp money) as a form of isolation. When the prisoners entered the camp they were forced to give up all of their valuables so that it could be converted into camp money. Once in the camp it was difficult to escape and survive as the money was only valid in the camp, thereby cutting the prisoners off from having a financial relationship with the outside world. There are also examples of Dutch ration cards, as well as a one billion Mark note.
