The book was given to Heinz Herczfeld as a barmitzvah gift in Germany, and was inscribed 23 June 1934. His wife, Miriam Herczfeld (nee Kleineibst), donated the Lexicon to the Cape Town Holocaust Centre in 2016.

In 1934 this German dictionary was considered to be a reputable reference book but numerous entries serve to highlight its bias and demonstrate racial thinking at the time. Entries of note include Eugenics (''Eugenik'', p. 381); Jews (''Juden", p. 681); Race (''Rasse'', p. 1295) and Racial Hygiene (''Rassenhygiene Rassenpflege, p. 1295).
