Biographical history
Laura Rautenbach was a sculptor, lecturer, international hockey player, equestrian show-jumper and farmer. She studied at the Michaelis School of Art at the University of Cape Town. On returning to the Free State, she initially worked as an artist at the National Museum but also developed a reputation for the private sculpting commissions she executed. After her father's death in 1956, she took over the sheep and cattle farming on the family farm Merlewood, but sculpting remained her main focus. Articles and clippings on Laura Rautenbach are contained in the collection, in folders C2 and E.
