Note
In the concluding chapter of Jan Theron's book "Solidarity Road", he focuses on the history of a shop-steward employed by the Premier group (now Premier Foods) at Attwell’s bakery, John Pici, as a case study of ‘empowerment’, and also as a case study of the transformation of the workplace that began in the mid-1990s. The understanding of this transformation, and how it has undermined the objectives of the system of labour regulation introduced in South Africa at the same time, are also themes canvassed in Jan Theron's academic writings.
