Scope and content

These extensive interviews conducted in 1994 document the diverse life experiences of domestic workers in Cape Town. These include full-time employees (ladies maid, nurse maid, child-minder), part-time employment (char, piece-worker). A few interviews were conducted at St. Saviours Church during their adult literacy classes (poor levels of education, unskilled teenagers). A number of interviews were conducted at the Cafda Morning Star Seniors Club. Themes include: employment conditions; hours worked; job insecurity; job reservation; living and sleeping arrangements; travelling expenses; wages.
