In 1955 the Simon’s Town agreement was signed by Great Britain and South Africa. In terms of this agreement, the SA Navy expanded and the Simon’s Town base and Naval Dockyard were handed over to South Africa on 1 April 1957. The SA Navy’s main naval base moved from Durban to Simon’s Town. Naval Headquarters also moved to Simon’s Town from Pretoria. Headquarters remained there until 1976 when it moved back to Pretoria. These interviews focus on dockworkers at the Simon’s Town Naval Dockyard. Themes include: apartheid; British parentage; education; employment opportunities under the royal navy (pre 1940 - 1945) and under the S.A. Navy (post-1948); family life; family origins (St. Helena and Mombasa); salaries; skills; slavery; trade union activity; types of work; workers histories and activities; working conditions. This sub-collection forms part of the life work of Albert Thomas who conducted substantial research on political and socio-economic issues in the Simon’s Town and Ocean View area.
