Willie Hofmeyr has held various political positions in South Africa. He first became involved in the democratic movement in the 1970s through the union movement. Later, he joined the United Democratic Front and the African National Congress. From 1994 until 1999, he served as a Member of Parliament for the African National Congress, as Parliamentary Advisor to the Deputy President. In 1996, he became involved in the negotiations for the South African Constitution, particularly in the last chapters providing for the Bill of Rights and the Judiciary. He has been a senior member of the Parliamentary Justice Committee and as such, he played a key role in the drafting of anti-crime legislation. In August 2001, he was appointed to head the Special Investigating Unit, which fights corruption and uses civil litigation to recover or prevent losses of state assets through corruption or maladministration.
