History
Turner emigrated to South Africa around 1865. His journal describes the voyage. He engaged in sugar-planting in Natal, then went to the diamond diggings, lived in Bloemfontein for a time, then settled at the Umzinkulu River as a trader. He then went to Port St Johns, ran a trading vessel from Durban to Port Grosvenor which he founded, discovered 800 "Grozvenor coins" from the wreck. He died at Port St Johns. He received the Royal Humane Society medal for saving some fifty people from drowning. He is mentioned in Theal, Napier Devitt "Persons and places" etc. (Note attached to letter from Basil Holt offering microform of journals and letters to UCT Libraries, 1954).
