Biographical history

Toni Saphra (Plaut) emigrated to South Africa from Germany in 1900. She was active in the philanthropic life of South Africa and its Jewish community, and in 1932 founded the first branch of the Union of Jewish Women in Cape Town.

This collection was handed over to Manuscripts and Archives via the Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies and Research, by Dr Hannah-Reeve Sanders. The collection is about Toni Saphra and the Plaut family, as well as the Union of Jewish Women. It contains a history of the Union of Jewish Women,”“The Child of My Heart and my Mind”: the History of the Union of Jewish Women, Cape Town, 1932-1997”, by Terri Strauss.
