Scope and content
Street committees are civic structures of community members from specific geographic areas. These committees liaise with government councillors and work towards reducing crime and socio-economic problems within their environments. These interviews are conducted with street committee members in Gugulethu and Langa. The main focus is the role of street committees in their respective communities. Specific attention is paid to interviewee participation (extent, activities, roles) and community responses. Key focus is placed on members’ reasons for joining or setting up committees in the 1970s - 1990s. There is a recurring theme of state resistance to community mobilisation. Themes include: ANC mobilisation; political branches/sections; civic protest action; community involvement; development of civic structures; gender divisions; geographical areas; Kensington; life histories; political involvement; service delivery.
