Edith Stephens, botanist.
Daughter of Michael and his wife Annie Hoskyn.
Matriculated at the Rustenburg Girls' High School in Rondebosch, Cape Town, in 1901.
Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, University of the Cape of Good
In 1907 she was awarded the 1881 Exhibition Science Research Scholarship by the South African College and entered Newnham College, University of Cambridge, to continue her studies in botany. Stephens returned to South Africa around 1911.
In June 1913 she succeeded W.T. Saxton* as lecturer in botany. She remained in the Department of Botany when the college became the University of Cape Town in 1918, until her retirement in 1940. Thereafter she continued as honorary reader in systematic botany (cryptogams) at the university's Bolus Herbarium until her death in 1966.
