St. John Ambulance Foundation is an educational/research, non-profit organisation (NPO). The Foundation works to enable South Africans to improve their health, safety and quality of life by providing first aid, home-based care, primary health training, eye care and community services to commerce and industry, schools, government departments, the military and to the general public so that they can assist in times of emergency at home and work. The Foundation provides a range of courses from advanced first aider to courses for school children. In addition, it runs educational courses for persons with limited reading and writing skills. he Cape Town Centre offers first aid, home-based care and HIV awareness courses; and also an eye care clinic which performs professional eye tests and dispenses glasses to under-privileged people. The eye clinic diagnoses cases where patients require corrective surgery such as cataract operations and refers them to eye hospitals for treatment. This screening process enables the hospitals to concentrate on their primary function of surgery
