History

On 19 January 1949 the government appointed the Eiselen Commission whose terms of reference were to inquire into and to report on all aspects of native (black) education. The recommendations of this commission formed the basis for the Bantu Education Act No.47 of 1953, which came into effect on 1 January 1954. The Commission recommended 'resorting to radical measures' for the 'effective reform of the Bantu school system'.
