Wilbur Stephen Smith is a well-known South African novelist. He was born in Russia into a family of South African diplomats. He attended primary school in Odessa, Russia until the age of 12 and was then sent to Michael House boarding school from the age of 13 until the age of 19. While attending Michael House he kept correspondence with his girlfriend, Jane Eyre, who was attending St. Mary's School for Girls. He started writing novels at the age of 21 and has been heralded as one of South Africa's most prolific novelists. He currently resides in Constantia in Cape Town with his wife, Jane.
