History
Philip Segal was born in Cape Town in 1915. He was educated at Hillel College and graduated from UCT in 1934 with an Arts degree. He subsequently attained a Masters degree at UCT in 1936, a Masters degree at the University College, London in 1939 and a B Ed at UCT in 1940. In 1941 he became a temporary lecturer in English Literature at UCT and in 1946 - a permanent lecturer. 1946 was also the year in which he married. In 1956 he became a senior lecturer and then Acting Head of Department in 1961. He was appointed to the second chair of English at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1966. He died in December 1970 at the age of 55.
