Scope and content
Papers relating to the successful opposition by four schools (South African College Schools [SACS], Diocesan College, St Andrews College and Paul Roos Gymnasium) to the re-allocation of the Rhodes Scholarship.
The papers are arranged in chronological order, from the petition signed by most of the Rhodes scholars in residence, requesting the Trustees of the Rhodes Scholarship to seek permission from the Charity Commissioners to request Parliament to remove the four scholarships from the Private Act, until 1991, when the action was dropped.
The papers include a large amount of correspondence: with the legal firms involved with the case and between the schools, and minutes of meetings of the joint committee of the four schools, which formed to fight the possible removal of the Scholarship. They also include records of the earlier successful action, in 1972-3, to prevent the scholarship being removed from the four schools. Also included are copies of the affidavits which were to be used in the case. Also of interest is information on the terms of Rhodes’ will, as it related to the Rhodes Scholarships.
The process whereby state schools in South Africa gradually became non-racial in the 1980s and 1990s is also documented.
