Biographical history

Douglas Brown was deputy headmaster of the South African College School (SACS), Newlands, Cape Town, and was the prime mover of an initiative starting in 1985 to open the school to all South Africans regardless of colour, race or creed. Flowing from this initiative an Open Schools Association was established.

Donated by Maeder Osler in 2015, to whom the material had been bequeathed in the estate of Douglas Brown.

Scope and content

The collection documents an initiative commencing in 1985 led by Douglas Brown, deputy headmaster of the South African College School (SACS) to open the school to all South Africans regardless of colour, race or creed. The collection tracks the initiative internally from within SACS teaching staff, to the headmaster, school council and parents, and then outwards to endeavours at contact with schools in Coloured and African townships leading to the establishment of an Open Schools Association.
