History

Rev. John Bowle, a noted authority on "Don Quixote", built up a private library of some note. Some 420 remaining volumes of this collection are in the U.C.T. Libraries and it is known as the Bowle-Evans Collection (Evans being the name of the Rev. J Bowle's descendants). From 1777 John Bowle was mainly engaged in writing on Spanish literature, particularly on the works of Cervantes. He edited 'Don Quixote' which appeared in 1781 in six quarto volumes, incl. a volume of notes and an index volume.
