Redvers Llewellyn, Welsh baritone, died in Eastbourne, on May 24, 1975, aged 73. He was born at Briton Ferry, Glam., and studied in Cardiff, London, and Milan with Oscar Daniel. After a few seasons with the Carl Rosa Opera in the early 1930s, he joined the Sadler's Wells Opera in 1934, and quickly established himself as the company's leading Verdi baritone, singing Posa in the first production in English of Don Carlos in 1938-9, as well as Count Luna, Germont, Rigoletto, Amonasro, Iago, and Ford. He took leading roles in many of the company's first performances at Rosebery Avenue, including John the Butcher in Hugh the Drover, Kothner, Faninal, and Kruschina in The Bartered Bride. His repertory also included Telramund, Figaro (Rossini), Tonio, Alfio, and Escamillo. After wartime service in the RAF he rejoined Sadler's Wells in 1945, and continued to sing with the company until 1948, after which he returned as a guest artist; he also appeared with the Carl Rosa Opera once again, creating the title-role in Lloyd's John Socman in 1951. From 1956 to 1969 he taught singing at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth, and from 1969 until his death was Professor of Singing at the Royal College of Music in London. Rita Hunter was one of his pupils.
