Scope and content
The 1960 Langa march coincided with the PAC’s national campaign to protest Pass Laws. In the Western Cape the march from Langa (and surrounding townships) to Caledon Police Station in central Cape Town was led by Phillip Kgosana. While these interviews focus on the events and memories of the 1960 Langa march, they also provide detailed life histories. Themes include: anti-government protests; burning of passes; Caledon Square Police Station; hostels; mass mobilisation; migrant labour; Pass Laws; police retaliation in Langa; political organisations and affiliations; surrounding communities’ involvement.
