Biographical history
Judge Diemont served as President of the SRC in 1933/34, when he was a student at UCT. In 1954 he was elected to the University Council, on which he served for over thirty years - for nearly half of this period, as Deputy Chairman. He also served as President of the University Court, and on the Governing Board of the Baxter Theatre. In 1976 he was honoured with an LLB(Honoris Causa) by this university. As well as devoting time to his Alma Mater, Judge Diemont was involved in the Simon van der Stel Foundation, which was established in 1959. Its purpose was to protect, preserve and restore historic buildings of the Cape, especially homesteads. He was also particularly interested in libraries, and served on the governing body of the Friends of the South African Library. This collection reflects these personal involvements, though the majority of the papers are professional papers. Mostly they concern cases where Judge Diemont himself presided.

Scope and content
Of particular note in Section A - Professional Papers, is:
1. The Report Of The Langa Commission Of Enquiry into the riots of 1960
2. The case of Consolidated Diamond Mines of SWA Ltd v. The Administrator of SWA.
Briefly CDM were fighting to protect the sole mining rights in demarcated areas of SWA, which had been granted to them at the beginning of the century. This was a particularly long and complicated case. This collection is presently incomplete as Judge Diemont has expressed his intention of adding to it at a later date. IN MAY 1997 the first additions were listed and integrated into the collection. The papers did not relate to those already in the collection, and so a new sub-section was created in Section B - Personal Papers. This was entitled Writings, and numbered B.4. The papers comprise the manuscripts, and publishers drafts, of Judge Diemont's autobiography Brushes With The Law; and also various files of notes, lists and manuscripts used in the preparation of his "Book on the Orange River".
