This file contains extensive further records of the Argus-SAAN 1968 negotiations, of the decision by Argus to take up the option and finalise the deal and of its cancellation after the Prime Minister, Mr B J Vorster, had indicated the government’s opposition on the grounds that the take-over would create a monopoly. The file records renewed negotiations (1969-1971) and agreement finally reached on an Argus-SAAN share exchange deal in January 1971. There are also records of opposition to the transaction by the South African Society of Journalists on the grounds that it contributed to a de facto take-over by Argus.
