Biographical history

Louis (1903-1974) was born in England of Lithuanian parents. He was apprenticed to a printer at the age of 14. He became a reporter and later editor of the Welwyn Times in 1928, and later sub-editor on the Sheffield Telegraph. He began writing articles for various journals, and moved South Africa in 1957, where he was sub-editor on the Natal Mercury. In 1965 he moved to Cape Town where he worked as a free-lance journalist writing for a wide variety of journals. His papers consist of files he kept on ideas for articles; and typescript and printed articles with related correspondence. Louis Katin died in Cape Town in 1974. Louis Katin’s son, David (1928-1975), was born in Welwyn Garden City, Herts, England. He was educated at Sheffield Grammar School and Queen’s College, Oxford, where he obtained his BA in 1951 and MA in Languages in 1967. He then became a Chartered Accountant and travelled widely in Europe and Israel, where he worked on a kibbutz and taught himself Hebrew. He was an accomplished linguist, speaking French, German, Italian and Spanish, and studying Russian and Arabic. He lectured in French at Natal University, where he was awarded his PhD in 1970. His papers consist of notebooks used for his Honours course and PhD, as well as a typescript copy of his PhD thesis, and the diary of a walking tour in Germany and a stay in France in 1950. He returned to England to teach and died there in 1975.
