Scope and content
The collection comprises research material, tapes, typescripts, photographs, manuscripts and proofs relating to the book of 'From Shtetl to Steelmaking. The story of three immigrant families and a family business' by Mendel Kaplan with Solomon Kaplan and Marian Robertson, published by the Kaplan-Kushlick Foundation in 1979. The research relates to history of the company Cape Gate Fence & Wire Works (Pty) Ltd, which was founded in Parow in August 1929. It was started by Isaac Kaplan (1906-1974) who invited two partners to join him: his brother Solomon Kaplan (1909- ) and Solomon Kushlick (1900- ).
Mendel Kaplan's aim in writing the book aside from covering the business history was to tell the story of the migration of Jews from Lithuania to South Africa between 1880 and 1901, demonstrating it by the story of three families and the family business.
