Scope and content

The Judge Family Papers were presented to the University of Cape Town Libraries in 1968 by Mrs J. Inglis and Mrs Ruth Thompson, granddaughters of E.A. Judge, and number 103 items.
The Papers consist of personal documents relating to the careers of Canon Edward Judge and his son Edward Arthur Judge. Canon Judge's papers include birth, marriage and ordination certificates and letters of appointment signed by Bishop Robert Gray, and cover the period 1824-1875.
The major part of the papers are those of E.A. Judge. These are particularly relevant to the history of the Eastern Cape, 1870-1876. Personalities like Charles Brownlee, first Secretary for Native Affairs, John X.Merriman, Sir Theophilus Shepstone and Dr. James Stewart of Lovedale are mentioned in the papers. There is also material relating to Namaqualand, Griqualand West and Matabeleland, 1862-1900, including handwritten copies of the reports of Commissions on which Judge sat.
