Biographical history
Justice De Villiers went to Oxford in 1914 on a Rhodes Scholarship, but returned to South Africa when World War I broke out, to join the army. Aftert he war he completed his studies at Oxford and obtained the degrees of BCL and MA. Many of the notebooks date from this period. In 1921 he began his legal practice in Cape Town. In 1935 he became KC, in 1939 judge, and from 1949-1959 he was Judge President of the Cape Division of the Supreme Court.

Mainly student notebooks on legal studies belonging to Justice Jean Etienne de Villiers (1894-1960); legal opinions (1933-1938); notebook belonging to HM Louwrens on water rights; letter from JG van Soelen (1942) enclosing a copy of a letter from Sir JER de Villiers (1875-1947), to Judge Jeppe re water & irrigation law (1916).
