Izak Frederick (Derick) Albertus de Villiers was born on 14 October, 1918 at Worcester, Cape, and educated at Paarl Boys High and the University of Cape Town, where he graduated with a B.A. in 1939.
During World War 11 he was commissioned in the South African Artillery in 1941, seconded to the British forces in 1943 and served with 1st Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery in the Middle East and Italy from 1943 to 1945. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1945 and served in senior capacities in Rome, London, Paris, Leopoldville and the United Nations until 1964. From 1965 to 1970 Mr. de Villiers was manager of the Nuclear Fuels Corporation of South Africa and Uranium Adviser to the South African Chamber of Mines.
In 1970 he was elected United Party Member of Parliament for Von Brandis, a seat he held until 1977. From 1973 to 1976 he was secretary to the United Party Caucus as Secretariat. In 1977 Mr. de Villiers joined the Progressive Federal Party, was elected M.P. for Constantia in the November 1977 General Election and was Deputy Chairman of the P.F.P. Federal Executive in 1978. He retired from politics in 1980.
Mr. de Villiers married Phyllida Compton in 1945 and has one son and two daughters.
