History

Born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, he was the son of W.H. Fremantle, Dean of Ripon. He was educated at Eton and Oxford and the London School of Economics. He taught at the University College of Aberystwyth in Wales and at Oxford, before coming to the South African College in 1899 as professor of English and Philosophy. In 1903 he resigned from the College in order to enter politics and journalism.
