Khayelitsha was established in 1985 under apartheid rule to house the influx of black residents in Cape Town. It lies 35km from the city centre and with over a million inhabitants, it is Cape Town’s largest township. In the current era it contains both formal and informal housing with residents experiencing high levels of crime and poverty. These in-depth interviews track household structures and residents in Khayelitsha in relation to poverty and living conditions.
