Khayelitsha was established in 1985 under apartheid rule to house the influx of black residents in Cape Town. It lies 35km from the city centre and with over a million inhabitants, it is Cape Town’s largest township. In the current era it contains both formal and informal housing with residents experiencing high levels of crime and poverty. This sub-collection, which explores chronic poverty in Khayelitsha households, expands on material gathered in [Eec1] and [Ewc8]. Themes include: crime; household structure; informal trade; life histories; subsistence. These interviews are lodged by PLAAS.
