Scope and content

Established in 1927, Langa is Cape Town’s oldest formal African township. Interviews trace the significance of sites of memory in Langa. Themes include: family histories; forced removals from Ndabeni to Langa; health; heritage conservation; 1960 Langa March; living conditions; Market Hall; memorial events; Mendi Square; Pass law office; political events; site specific memories; social activities (afternoon spends); traditional practices (circumcision). This project was commissioned by the Cape Town City Council and material is included in a chapter ‘Sites of memory in Langa’ in the book: Imagining the city: Memories and cultures in Cape Town (2007).
