The album belonged to Miss Edith Orpen, daughter of Mr Henry Orpen, who lived at “Fairfield”, Aliwal Road, Wynberg, Cape Town. Miss Orpen was a maternal aunt of Mrs Paul Fisher. Mrs Fisher’s father was a Joubert, who married a Miss Orpen. Her father’s mother was a Miss Reitz, a sister of President F W Reitz. Another sister married Devenish and another sister married W P Schreiner.
The Orpens lived formerly at St John’s Cottage, Cape Town.
Lord Baden-Powell was a friend of the Misses Orpen. The album contains a letter, autographs, a portrait and a watercolour sketch by him sent from India. Rudyard Kipling was also a friend, presumably at the time of his first visit, when he lived in a boarding-house in Wynberg.
