This is the second of two sub-collections titled ‘Imini Zakudala‘ (Xhosa for ‘Those were the days’) and focuses on the lives of those living in Gugulethu, Cape Town, during the apartheid era, particularly during the 1980s. Themes include: African traditional beer (umqombothi); crime and riots; family life; participation in politics; police abuse; political parties; racial dynamics in Gugulethu and surrounding areas; traditional customs; school and work life; unions; 1994 democratic elections. Originally titled ‘Trauma and Memory Project,’ it also includes photographic and exhibition material.
