This is the first of two sub-collections titled ‘Imini Zakudala‘ (Xhosa for ‘Those were the days’) and focuses on people living in Gugulethu, Cape Town, during the apartheid era, particularly during the 1980s. Themes include: African traditional customs; church and political parties assisting the community, specifically during the 1980s; family life; food boycotts of white-owned shops; Pass Laws; political activities over the past forty years; quality of life after the 1994 elections; role of the comrades; school and work life; South African Defence Force and police force in Gugulethu. Originally titled ‘Trauma and Memory Project,’ it also includes photographic and exhibition material.
