Simon’s Town is situated 45kms from central Cape Town and is the southern-most town in the Cape Peninsula. From Murdoch Valley in the south to Glencairn in the north and over the Redhill Mountains, coloured people have been settled there for more than two centuries. In 1967 Simon’s Town was declared a white group area forcing coloured residents to relocate to Ocean View. These interviews focus on forced removals, their effects on communities living in and around the Simon’s Town area and subsequent relocation to Ocean View. Themes include: education; land reclamation; life histories; protests; psychological effects of forced removals; recreation; responses to the Group Areas Act; work. This research was adapted into a chapter ‘It changed everybody’s lives›; the Simon’s Town Group Areas removals’ in the book: Lost communities, living memories; Remembering forced removals in Cape Town (2001).
