Scope and content

Following the outbreak of the Bubonic Plague, Ndabeni was established in 1901 at the Uitvlugt forest station. Although conceived as a temporary settlement for black residents in Cape Town, it continued to house residents for decades. Themes include: Bantu education; civic organisations; churches; housing laws; leisure activities; life in the Transkei; Ndabeni as the first African temporary settlement in Cape Town; politics; schooling; sport; urban migration.
