Donated jointly in 2019 by the children of Dr Aubrey Zabow, Phillip Zabow, Frank Zabow, Louise Sebba and Steven Zabow.

Scope and content

The papers were received or gathered by psychiatrist Dr Aubrey Zabow as a member of a panel of psychiatrists appointed by the defence team of Demitrios Tsafendas, who had been charged with the assassination of Dr Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd on 6 September 1966. The papers include the initial state medical and psychiatric reports; transcript of police interrogation and statement by Tsafendas; transcripts of the defence lawyer's initial interviews with Tsafendas; transcripts of psychiatric examinations by psychiatrists and a clinical psychologist appointed by the defence team; statements of witnesses; historical medical reports on Tsafendas from overseas and Somerset and Groote Schuur Hospitals; and published professional articles.
