Scope and content
The emergence of rap and its related dance and musical genres occurred in the latter part of the 20th century in Cape Town. These interviews concentrate on the 1980-2000 period and contextualise the emergence of Cape Town rap in a time of large-scale resistance to the oppressive state system. Themes include: break-dancing; Cape Flats; commercialisation; emceeing; gender discrimination; genres; history of international Hip Hop and Rap; musical nationalism; political environment; venues. This research was developed into the article Da struggle continues into the 21st Century: Two decades of nation conscious rap in Cape Town in the book Imagining the city: Memories and cultures in Cape Town (2007).
