André Malan Hugo was born in Worcester on 13 February 1929. From 1946 to 1950 he was a student at Stellenbosch University, obtaining an MA in Classics. He completed his doctoral studies at Utrecht University in 1957. In 1951 he was appointed to the Department of Classics at Stellenbosch University as junior lecturer, and was promoted to senior lecturer in 1957. He moved to UCT in 1969 as head of the Department of Classics. Apart from his academic activities, Prof. Hugo was an active participant in public affairs. He was a member of the Simon van der Stel Foundation, and had a particular interest in the conservation and preservation of old buildings. He was active in the Dutch Reformed Church, and served on the council of Stellenbosch’s “Moederkerk”. He also wrote a history of this famous church. He was a member of the South African Genealogical Society as well as the South African Classical Society. He further served as part of the management of the Stellenbosch branch of the Progressive Party. Professor Hugo died in 1975 at the age of 46 after a long illness.
